In another thread, about gnash, they mentioned moving to agg for its lightweightness. How do these two compare? Eg. do you think they could have moved to cairo as well?
Gnash has 3 rendering options at present, seletable at compile-time. First there was OpenGL which has problems due to closed-source accelleration drivers crashing and mesa being slow. Then someone implemented cairo which turns out to be even slower, and Udo Giacomozzi just implemented an AGG-based renderer. The AGG renderer is much faster then unaccellerated OpenGL or cairo and is looking like becoming the renderer of choice. To be fair, cairo's site says that now that they have the functionality they are working on speed, but at present AGG wins hands down.
