I think java-gnome is the way to do java gui's on this small linux devices, because it is really fast and offers the opportunity to integrate with special gui extensions (e.g. hildon on maemo or libmokoui on openmoko). But this may be my special taste and will be exchangeable, if someone has a different task to solve.
My personal vote goes to SWT, works on top of j2me, gtk GUI implementation, actively pushed by IBM and has loads of software already. (likewise for AWT and Swing, but AWT is hardly used and really sucks and Swing is way too heavy IMO). Ah yes, that would also be a vote for j2me, also to have a standard commandline for the jvm.
