Magda,
I did some further testing with one of my most complex Excel workbooks
(a 5 year financial plan) with tons of cross links, computations, error
checks, etc. and, to my surprise, it rendered quite well, down to and
including some detailed (computed) bar graphs on some of the worksheets.
And by the way the the ribbon to show the worksheet tabs is not visible
by default. You have to enable it by going to the application drop down
menu, selecting, "View" and then selecting "View Sheet Selector" .
Of course given the small screen size of the N800, and despite the
outstanding screen resolution, reading spreadsheet details or graph
details can be hard to read at normal resolution. There is a zoom
feature, however, the app does not appear to be designed to support the
use of the stylus to grab the screen contents and navigate around the
spreadsheet using that method. Also with a very complex spreadsheet, not
surprisingly, the N800 responds more slowly.
Now...if I can find a Word .doc and Powerpoint file reader as good as
Gnumeric and this port to Maemo!

Magda,
I was able to get gnumeric installed and working on my N800 and I was
able to open a .~.5mb Excel Spreadsheet that was created with Microsoft
Excel 2003. From my quick review it appears that formating is preserved
including features such a frozen panes, colors, etc. I will do some more
testing with more complex Excel spreadsheets (e.g. multi-tab,
links, defined cells, etc. to see what works and what does not.
If you have files that have been created using the new file format
(.xlsx) available in the Office 2007 version of Excel then they will
need to be saved as .xls (Excel 97-2003 format) files. To confirm this,
I tried opening an .xlsx file with gnumeric but it did not open.
Interestingly, when I use gnumeric on the N800 by means of a VNC
session, and, using the mouse on my computer, if I right click on a
cell, Gnumeric brings up a menu of options as, I assume Gnumeric is
designed to do (and, of course, as Excel is designed to do). This has
led me to wonder if there is a way to get the N800 stylus to do the same
thing by, e.g. varying the pressure or fast double clicking using the
stylus. Unfortunately I could not get the menu to come up.
This in turn led me to wonder that if I used my right hand instead of
my left hand with the stylus on the N800 itself to select the cell that
the N800 would be smart enough to recognize that I was using my right
hand and perform the "right click" action designed into the software.
That didn't work either!
