The 770's battery was required for operation: I've not got my N800
with me today to check if it can run battery-less.  ISTR that others
have said on this list that it also completes the circuit, without
which the N800 can't power on.

FWIW, I charge my N800 for ~8 hours (overnight) each day and haven't
(~1 year of use) seen any significant change in the battery life.
