GStreamer has midi-playback support. In gst-plugins-bad is a plugin which has timidity and wildmidi based elements. Both libraries use the same sounds, but the later sound a bit nicer. Unfortunately both libraries are kind of unmaintained. You could try to make a package similar to Tuomas Kulves ogg-support and package timidity/wildmidi + a patch + the gstreamer plugin + desktop file + sharedmime support.
