Can't we have the hacked dpkg-buildpackage add (if optification is turned on) maemo-optify to the build dependencies? Then it will get installed automatically. It is essential that it is in a repository (and preferably not the SDK repository -- I would like to see it in extras-devel) so that it can be updated very quickly if we need to fix bugs or change its behaviour. Particularly while Ed is on holiday!
