It is actually debhelper that is too old in the Maemo SDK, not dpkg.  As
you Faheem has shown, you can work around that quite easily.

We never thought that we might need to update build tools in the SDK.
It's a big surprise that this is necessary.

(Joking, of course.  I'd say the old tools in the SDK is just another
example of how all love is lost when big corporations try to do open
source.)
