As a follow-up to this... For binaries, one can live without symlinks, as
long as the .desktop if updated accordingly (as in the samples you linked
to) - except for the minor inconvenience that the app isn't available in
the path by default, but what about other files that the system wants in
certain locations?
In particular, maemo-optify currently optifies some of my icons, too - is
there any way to have them read from nonstandard locations? On the other
hand, I guess I can skip optification of them, too.
