I've got the .51 image installed and I am unable to add an event with an
alarm to gpe-calendar (the older or the newer version). It just pins the
CPU and never returns after hitting save. I've removed .gnome2/gpe after
installing the newer version but the same problem persists. Is this a
known bug?

The same happend here, and also when setting an alarm for a previously created event (.51 firmware  as well). It seems that Florian has already solved this bug, you can find the updated (but still untested) packages here:
