You don't need root priviledges to install Python for Maemo. Just download the pymaemo runtime from pymaemo.sf.net and install it using the application installer on the Nokia 770. Uninstalling is also that easy.
If you wan't to install the pymaemo on the Maemo SDK on your PC you might need some tricks, but that is quite straightforward also.
