I don't remember this on the 770, but if press and hold the home key
on the N800 it will hide everything and drop you to the home screen.
Press and hold again and you are back again.

Not out of the box; I'm not sure if people have managed to remap
hardware keys yet.

FWIW, I find that the time to drop $APP out of full-screen mode and
start a new application with the stylus is sufficiently small as to
validate Nokia's decision not to provide a hardware button for this
function.
