This is not true. Messages are appropriately marked within the mail
headers, you need to configure your mail client to _automatically_
tag/label/sort messages based on their existing header information
_before_ you read them.
I have set this up, though I don't care for having different colours.
One thing I noticed was that while I set it up on my home computer,
messages are also tagged on my work computer. I read my mail from my
own IMAP server.
