Well, GPS on n810 can be extremely frustrating (I had my shares of trouble with it) when you don't know anything about GPS (like most of us), because of its low sensitivity. I suggest you install maemo-mapper, mostly because it give you a better view of what is happening while GPS fix is in progress (compared to Maps). Moreover, if you never had a fix with your n810, the first fix for your geographical position can be extremely long (more than 12 minutes since it needs that time to download almanac for your position, this data is valid several weeks). And if you are moving or in a bad reception location, it can be very very long. Once you get the almanac downloaded, fix time can be shorter (5 minutes to 10 minutes in bad conditions). And if you got a fix in the last 2 hours, you might be able to get a "hot" fix in less than 30s. If you get a fix, try to stay on the location until you get 8 to 10 satellites, I've noticed it allows faster hotfixes.
