Doing a lot of writes to JFFS2 can also slow the device down. Do you
have also RSS refresh enabled and/or are viewing lots of streamed
videos without memory card (if there's no space on memory card, videos
are buffered to rootfs)?
Have you filed a bug against Modest about this?
