I just noticed that it's the albums encoded as Ogg Vorbis files which are lacking the cover images, and googling with this information noticed me about an existing bug report on that topic: https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7413 So the problem is known and does not work out of the box at the moment.
