Thierry Vignaud is certainly the one that is aware about freeglut versus
GLUT ! He is the one that may say if you are right or wrong to do so now !
Beware of the fact that freeglut is not a buildrequire nor a require for
some rpms (their spec file need to be modified
and they need to be rebuilt with freeglut instead of mesaglut)

what would happen if freeglut has a provides glut ?
If neither were installed, wouldn't one be given the option ? (as long as
both are available in the repos) (as one sees often enough when installing
packages)
And if both glut and freeglut were installed, and glut were subsequently
uninstalled, would packages requiring glut continue to work ?
Freeglut (libfreeglut3) can already replace mesaglut (libmesaglut3).
