There's ongoing effort to reduce that (for mageia 2). See https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=609 Currently installing basesystem w/o suggests results in: 255MB of additional disk space will be used. 91MB of packages will be retrieved. Proceed with the installation of the 201 packages? (Y/n) (modulo a little less space if you only choose a coule locales) Feel free to help breaking the require cycles (with and without suggests ideally)
