I have ruled out CPU and graphic over utilization - as well as heavy network traffic. I also just experienced this phenomenon on my newish Thinkpad X220 with an i7-2620 processor and Intel graphics card - 8Gig memory and 512 SSD - I had to reboot because the whole system was unresponsive. I have yet to find the cause, and the logs up to this point are not helping . . . maybe I should file a bug, but want to see if this is machine specific or something more serious with the latest kernels.
