Cauldron had recently been incredibly slow at bootup - 17 minutes to get to a functional desktop. It is now back to the normal time for the netbook, between 1 and 2 minutes. Only two things have changed. I assume the first one is the relevant one, but for the sake of completeness: My problems with wireless connection are cured. The way to tackle this is found in https://www.mageia.org/pipermail/mageia-dev/2012-November/020237.html I removed some of the no-longer-used kernels, using MCC. I do not expect this to be relevant, but it was done before I rebooted. Hope this helps someone.
