It's a fresh install....I haven't had the chance to test it before.
These look like the \.notdef glyph which is printed when the character code
sent to the printer does not have a glyph mapped to that code in the requested
font.
(NB This is at least true for postscript printers using Adobe type 1 fonts)

Thanks for the explanation, so this is more a font issue, not directly related
to hplip update :)
