Maybe you should try mga2b3 liveCD?
And if you like it just go for it.

Feedbacking on any problem also gives better chance that mga2 will work better
on your machine later :)
I am getting productive on mageia 2 already, but carefully as per above on
important machines.

Yes that is probably the best way to go. These Alienware machines are a
bit challenging for Linux so I thought I would stick with what I know
but since the X51 is not needed for production just now it can remain a
test machine.
