This sounds like a network configuration failure somewhere, possibly in your 
router. If you can connect to your other computers in the network (ping, nmap, 
smbclient etc.) then your card seems to be working fine. If your card was 
malfunctioning, I would presume you wouldn't get any network at all.

Did you try the live CD on Another computer, to verify if it works on another 
computer?

Does it sound like the NIC is defective?

If you get access to the rest of your network but not the internet, I would say 
no. Your nic seems to be working.
And since you seem to have tried other distros, it also sounds like your router 
is somehow configured to not let the IP your computer use, through to the 
internet.
I would check that the router is configured to let through all the IPs your 
dhcp server is handing out.

Thanks for the note. I took it back and left with egg on my face as it worked perfectly well with one of the IT's linux Mint stick ... he suggested I use it instead.

So, I took the unit back home and eliminated all 5 switches (we have to boys in the family who have their buddies over with their machines for gaming -- our house is also completely wire (we had it done about 10 years ago when we had it built)) and for some reason the router would not let the new unit on no matter what (it had an ip address of 192.168.1.12).

I then tried to re-set the router and it refused to reset 4 times before it finally reset completely. That was it. Now everything works as per normal.

We had some bad thunderstorms about 3 weeks ago with multiple power failures in the space of about an hour and a half. Maybe that was it. I'll replace the router the next time I go back to the store and explain IT staff.

Now I can get back to my installation.
