The talk about Mageia and Mandriva not wanting to talk to each other
seems incorrect.  Mandriva explained that Mageia was forked from an
earlier version of Mandriva, and they had diverged too far now.  The
image of the two orbiting each other like a binary star is apt.  Is
there room for Mageia alongside a resurrected Mandriva?

You could ask if there is room for openSUSE alongside Fedora or Mint alongside Ubuntu or...Onky time will tell, which distros will grow and which won't. I don't see any point in this question. Mageia is Mageia and we will see, what will become of Mandriva.
This too is something only time can tell!
