Then, a few minutes ago I had a brainwave. I'm used to setting up my external sound card and 5.1 speakers in System Settings, but I'd never checked MCC. PulseAudio was not enabled, and the Intel driver was being used. Enabling PA and switching to the "Unknown" driver worked wonders. I now have beautiful sound!
