Thank you, that made me have a closer look and discover that something
in my .thunderbird had evidently been corrupted (a recent violent
thunderstorm ?) - also the "find" utility did not work.
Rather than reconfiguring from scratch, I copied a .thunderbird from a
system on a spare partion which I had made the other day: problem
solved, the find utility works again and customisations stay put.
Btw, a "Delete" button in the main window gets enabled once you
highlight a message in the list and allows to do deletes more rapidly.
