I think it was my question that you remember. Someone did confirm my feeling that VLC should play the file in question, but it failed. Eventually I found that the person who sent it to me (via a cloud upload) also couldn't play the file, even though his original was still fine, so maybe "the cloud" had rained on it :-) Other than making sure you have the tainted sources enabled so that it can get the required codecs, I can't suggest anything else, sorry.
