When you run the configure script before you compile ImageMagick, look at the last 50 or so lines of output. It will tell you whether certain delegate libraries are validated or not. If it says JPEG was not validated, look at config.log to determine why. Fix the problem and rerun the configure script until it says JPEG is validated. Only then will ImageMagick read / write JPEG images (after you compile / install of course).
