Since I'm having no luck getting ImageMagick to work on RedHat Enterprise Linux 4 ES, what is the best (simplest) distribution to use if I want to use ImageMagick with JPEG and Perl ?
Im using Debian. Originally because I wanted to directly support the GNU project. And because I was creating a honeypot (setup on defaults as a trap for hackers). But I found it didnt work as a honeypot (5 years and no breakins) so I switched the honeypot back to RH and now use Debian as my main server.
IM didnt come installed but it is listed in the dselect catalog as an official package. You just select it and it downloads, installs, and setups up any dependents or configuarins it needs. Then to get the latest version I had to change the dselect config to temporarily allow "test" packages, but I thought that was a pretty good thing for them to do.
I like the Debian arrangement. The dselect catalog is extensive enough that if I want to accomplish anything or add some feaure then I can usually find a package or two that will do it. As long as I keep to whats in dselect, staying updated and patched (and secure) is very easy. And it makes it clear if Im going for some toy that hasnt been completly checked out yet.
By the way, everything has its pros and cons. Debian its definetly not the easiest version out there for doing the initial install.
Gandalf Parker -- I used them, they used me now I am an ISP. With a knick-knack paddy-whack debian linux clone I am now my /root at /home _______________________________________________ Magick-users mailing list [email protected] http://studio.imagemagick.org/mailman/listinfo/magick-users
