The job is rather simple, I made an order system for a client, people can
design a postcard online.  The client wanted real time previews of the
variable data the user was entering in.  I rigged it with CSS as best as I
could since they did not want to invest the time to do it as an image.

Sounds like the project idea that brought me here. I was looking for a partner on a "design your tshirt" project. But apparently it was easier to do scripted like this http://www.iheartshirt.com/shirts/

However I was intrigued by the beautiful brackgrounds that could be generated by ImageMagick. Such as asking the user for two colors and generating a plasma cloud from it. I was going to use it in some sort of "make your own greeting cards" thing thru a CafePress shop.

Oh and another thought I will give up. If you can work in the unicode fonts you can easily offer many favorite wingdings with no copyrite worries. Chess pieces, card suits, stars, pointing fingers, tons of stuff.
