A IM will read in the image before identifying it and it does not use
24 bit values, IM probably will not be able to tell you.

You will need a specific BMP identification program, such as provided
for other formats.  EG:   jpegtrans   pngtrans  giftrans

I don't know what you can use,  but maybe  the UNIX   file   comannds
can tell you.
