This is an interesting thread. Thanks. the stats pacakge R has some mapping capabilities.

Well, not using ImageMagick, but have you looked at MapServer? Web- based, but it's made for exactly this sort of GIS data overlay, and you can easily save an image off a web page. There are various scripting interfaces to it also (Python, Perl, ...), so it doesn't even have to go over the web. And there are a few front-ends that smooth out some of the map-file and site design for you, and may have image-saving features. http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/ Another possibility is GRASS GIS. A little steep learning curve (it's a full GIS), but has presentation capabilities, and is fully scriptable. Has some animation capabilities (including 3D). http://grass.itc.it/ One GIS I've heard of is GMT. It's supposed to have excellent PostScript output, which could be fed into ImageMagick. Imagemagick doesn't really have any geospatial capabilities, so you'd be 'reinventing' the stuff already done in the above software. Or in the GIS the 'other person' is working on.
