Dear colleagues,

I have ported lately a weather model from an older SGI machine to a new
Sun (SPARC), each running a different version of ImageMagick. When I
displayed the generated images (which are shown daily on our web site) on
the Sun machine I realised there was a serious problem with the
combination of images:

On the SGI machine (IRIX OS)
having ImageMagick (Version: @(#)ImageMagick 4.2.8 99/08/01)
the command:

combine -compose over map_meteo.gif 006.tif sgi-006.gif

produces the image sgi-006.gif, which is the desirable result, i.e. the
superposition of clouds on top of the map.

By contrast, on a Sun (SPARC) machine
with ImageMagick (Version: @(#)ImageMagick 5.4.7 07/01/02)
the command ("combine" has been replaced by "composite" in later versions):

composite -compose over map_meteo.gif 006.tif sun-006.gif

simply places the first image (map_meteo.gif) on top of the second
(006.tif) creating as output the file sun-006.gif (i.e. just the map),
which, obviously is not what we want.

I've tried various approaches towards solving this problem, to no
(satisfactory) effect. I would be grateful if you could provide advice on
how to achieve the same result as with the older version of ImageMagick.

Many thanks in advance,

Angela Balou.
