Well I would start by first tring to improve the overall contrast of the
image, to try and remove the background noise.
You can try -sigmodial-contrast, with various settings, which can vary
from no-change to a full threshold at whatever level you like.
Some normalization may also help, with removing the extreme limits
using -contrast-stretch This is a linear greyscale stretch of the
image.
Only after you have cleaned up the image would I attempt to use
edge detection, or better still -lat (local adaptive threshold)
Also the new -adaptive-sharpen (IM v6.2.7-3 onward) may be useful
to remove any fuzzyness around the lines.
