I am not trying to achieve a vector-to-vector conversion, but "only" to 
generate thumbnails. With this in mind, I think it seems most likely that a 
PostScript file generated from the drawing would do nicely. I am sure there are 
some challenges ahead.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions, and especially the programmers who 
have given us this wonderful tool.
