Did you just try convert -crop 128x128? That sounds like it's what you
really want.

Yeah, thanks. That's what I tried then next and it worked out fine. I think though,
that the resulting images had a bounding box around being that of the
original image and I could't help other than reading the gifs once into
"xv" (my second favorite image manipulation  program, under Unix, though).

There's probably be a way under  IM to strip off that bounding box, too.
