The uncompressed data in IM has 4 channels per pixel (RGBA) whether the source has it or not. This means that it's 40346*6144*2*4 = 2GB used up for the source image. You just have to tell IM to use all that memory, although it probably can't use more than about 1.5GB on a 32-bit machine. I would recommend using a Q8 build because it will use half the RAM and CPU, although it may deliver suboptimal results for -normalize depending on the histogram of the source image.
