| But I would prefer to do it in one step if possible but the following do not

| Composite -compose multiply image1.gif po.text -font courier -pointsize 12

| Or
| Composite -compose multiply image1.gif text:po -font courier po.gif

| Can the font be specified in the composite command? Thanks in advance for

During IM v6 development -compose setting and -composite operator
options were added to "convert"
As such try...
convert -font courier -pointsize 12 po.text \
image1.gif -compose multiply -composite \
po.gif
