| copy/paste from the tutorial, I typed it in and I still do not get a
| composite. I get the white A in one file, but the composite command simply
| creates a file with a rose, no A overlaid.

Sorry We have not heard of this problem, though there are other problems
with the 6.2.4 release.
You could try to convert a later0 RPM to an APT but I don't know how
successful it would be.
