When I ran -debug cache I realized that I had forgotten to upgrade  
from v6.2.9 to v6.3.2, so I did that and things are working  
splendidly now. What used to take hours (days?) now takes minutes.

Thanks for being one step ahead of me! (Sorry to waste your time.)
For the record, I'm on a machine with 2 CPUs and 8GB of RAM.
