Are you sure your J2223.jpg is actually a jpeg image?

This worked fine to me...

convert logo: -matte -virtual-pixel transparent -channel A -blur 0x8
  miff:- | display -

So I tried with an image too...

  convert logo: logo.jpg
  convert logo.jpg -matte -virtual-pixel transparent -channel A -blur 0x8
    miff:- | display -

No problem.

NOTE: you will only get a 'half transparency' at the edges of your image
with this method. to get full transparency at the very edge you need to
expand the transparency. For example add

-evaluate subtract 50% -evaluate multiply 2

before the final output filename argument.
