I use ImageMagick convert for editing scanned 35mm images & it is superb imho. It's the only app that'll do complex edits on large ~3000x2000 16-bit tiffs with sufficient speed on my humble windoze me machine. Thanks to every one who has contributed!

Anyway I typically use the -unsharp command with 0 radius, letting convert figure out an appropriate radius, e.g.
-unsharp 0x1+4+0

(I've done extensive fiddling with the parameters and this is what I use for producing a sharpened image for later layering.)

Question is how does IM go about determining an appropriate radius? & is it image size dependant?

I can (sort of) read code but have not downloaded the source. So if my ?'s are best answered by my reading the code I'd appreciate any tips/links as to which module(s) to look at.

TIA
