  You can select between  the plain text (P1-3) and binary (P4-6) formats
  by using the  -compress  setting.

  For example --- a plain text PGM (P2) image
       compress pattern:fishscales  -compress None  plain.pgm

  Or a binary PGM (P5) image (use default compression)
       compress pattern:fishscales  +compress  binary.pgm
