| size of the image was indeed 1251x168, and not 85x87 as shown by display.

Specifically..

GIF images make active use of the 'page' or 'virtual canvas', size and
offset information in images cropped by IM. If you don't want this
information remove it with "+repage" immediatally after the "-crop".
