Victor: You didn't say what platform you are using? If Windows you might
want to look at doing this with Gimp, Winmorph and Avi2Gif. I sure some
of the steps could be done with ImageMagik, I just don't have knowledge
to use it well yet - which is why I'm lurking here. :-)
As you describe it, sounds like an interesting task so I did one myself.
If you are doing only one or a couple of these it might be worth having
a look at winmorph http://www.debugmode.com/winmorph/ - very slick
program (designed to be a plugin to various video editors but AFAICT
will do your job handily.)
Output is always AVI but you can tell it you just want 8 frames.
Avi2Gif (I googled "avi2gif" and found
http://www.caecus.co.uk/category/projects/avi2gif/ there appear to be
lots of others)
For my test I used Gimp to put small-picture on top of big-picture,
saved that as a Small_onBig.PNG then in WinMorph asked it to transform
Small_on_Big.PNG to Big_original.PNG, fed the output AVI to Avi2Gif
(which generated 8 intermediate JPG's and the GIF)
Actually in files shown below: CHIMP is big_picture and GIRL is
small_picture
I then changed the transition rate from 40 ms to 1000 ms with Gimp.
