I have another data point for you. I mentioned it earlier but only as a side note. Take this input file and convert it to a PNG:
http://leopold.sage.wisc.edu/testing/N048W093.sm.tif (input)
http://leopold.sage.wisc.edu/testing/N048W093.sm.png (output)

Using this simple command:
convert N048W093.sm.tif N048W093.sm.png

The output is black. The problem goes away when you compile with the quantum set to 16. I've tried this on both my and my wife's computers with the same result.

Can anyone verify? Thoughts?

I'm not sure if any IM developers are paying attention to this bug

Can you download ImageMagick-6.3.5-9 Beta from
ftp://ftp.imagemagick.org/pub/ImageMagick/beta and see if you can reproduce the problem? We could not. 6.3.5-9 is scheduled for release within a week.
