For what it's worth, I figured out that my problem has nothing to do with the -compose switch. I'd greatly appreciate some advice on how to debug.

I've uploaded some images for testing purposes. bg.jpg is an example of the bottommost image, hour7.png is an example of one of the overlay images (Several png files are composited over the bg.jpg) and finally newWallpaper.bmp is an example of a resulting BMP file.

With the standard WinXP Picture and Fax Viewer, newWallpaper.bmp looks fine, but with most other image viewers I've tried the image has an ugly green/blue haze as though it is missing one or more colours. Also, I cannot use the resulting image as a windows wallpaper.
