Yes, black in the mask should be totally transparent and white should
be totally opaque. So I must have got my logic backwards in the
percentages to replace on the white. I am not sure why gray50 would
not work for -fill gray50 -opaque white for your mask.

Yes, this works in principle, but the functioning of "mask" is
inversively to what I would have expected: black is transparent and
white is opaque! Thus I arrive at the correct mask by
