        $ file 7e.png
        7e.png: PNG image data, 16 x 24, 8-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced
        $ mogrify -type Palette -colors 4 7e.png
        $ file 7e.png
        7e.png: PNG image data, 16 x 24, 16-bit/color RGB, non-interlaced

Perhaps I just have a hosed up version of IM?
