Probably your version of IM. What version are you using? I am
running IM 6.5.4-7 beta

Try this:

convert rose: rose.png
identify -verbose rose.png
   Format: PNG (Portable Network Graphics)
   Class: DirectClass
   Geometry: 70x46+0+0
   Resolution: 72x72
   Print size: 0.972222x0.638889
   Units: Undefined

now

convert rose.png -density 150 rose.tif
identify -verbose rose.tif
Image: rose.tif
Format: TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
   Class: DirectClass
   Geometry: 70x46+0+0
   Resolution: 150x150
   Print size: 0.466667x0.306667
   Units: Undefined

>what I try in terms of combinations of -density, -units, -strip, and

>tiff still shows up in identify (and gimp, for example) as 72x72.
