Friends,

I am processing tens of thousands of PNG files. Each file is 1280x720 pixels
and has a 24bit color depth. The procedure is complicated, but basically I am
grabbing slices: single columns or rows from up to 1280 images and reordering
them to create new images. This procedure is being managed in Rmagick, though
it could be done with shell scripts. The resulting images will be packed into
HD video and eventually output to film.

I'm writing because this procedure is taking too long--up to 60 seconds per
file on an Intel Mac. I want to buy, or assemble a new box that will increase
performance by a factor of 10, spending no more than $1000 US. What should I
get? Dell? HP? Something like Ars Technica's latest "hot rod"
(http://bit.ly/1jwjXs)? What would you do?

Thanks for your help,
-Douglas
